Area of benefit
Bridgend Farmhouse has a defined Area of Benefit in South East Edinburgh which serves as the primary focus for our activities and impact. It is predominantly made up of the postal code areas of EH16 and EH17. It includes the areas of Craigmillar, Niddrie, Inch, Moredun, Gilmerton, and Bridgend.
Approximately 43,000 people live in our Area of Benefit. Data from the Scottish Government’s Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation shows nearly 17,000 people live in households in the 20% most deprived areas in our Area of Benefit – over 4,500 of whom live in the 5% most deprived areas in Scotland.
Our 2023 Community Insight Report (produced by DTAS, OCSI and HACT) provides the following insights into our Area of Benefit:
Over 30% of people have no qualifications compared with 17% across the city.
22% of people have a limiting long-term illness compared with 4% across the city.
17% of pensioners are living in poverty compared with 10% across the city.
Other themes include high unemployment, poor health, and limited access to affordable facilities.
The approach at Bridgend Farmhouse is to welcome people from all backgrounds and all walks of life in order to create a transformative and inclusive community with the capacity to improve lives and build connection.
People who live in our area of benefit can get a neighbour card for discounts on many of our courses and events.
