Artist in Residence - Grace Pow
I am a local artist and illustrator. Art has always interested me since childhood but it wasn’t until my granddaughter was born that I decided to go to college to study it. During my time at Edinburgh College I gained both my National and Foundation Diplomas as a mature student as well as specializing in Illustration for my HND. At present I am studying for my Degree in Illustration at Edinburgh College of Art.
Over the past few years I have taken part in a few exhibitions and created a poster which NHS Lothian are using as part of their Stop Smoking Campaign. I have also written and illustrated a Don’t Talk to Strangers booklet which was sponsored by The City of Edinburgh Council and distributed to local schools and nurseries. Portraiture is a personal favourite of mine as I enjoy creating a sense of photo-realism in my work. This has resulted in my being commissioned by people to draw portraits of their family, friends or pets.
My main inspiration comes from people – their mannerisms and their expressions – but I also draw inspiration from nature and the environment. Artists and illustrators who inspire me are Drew Struzan, Shirley Hughes, Chris Riddell, Shaun Tan, Ryan Mutter and the Pre- Raphaelites.
I believe that everyone is creative in their own way and that this creativity should be cultivated in a fun and relaxed way. Art is a great way for people to connect with their environment and express themselves through a variety of artistic mediums.
