Pride of Place
Bridgend Farmhouse sits at the entrance to Craigmillar Castle Park, and acts as a gateway to this wonderful woodland.
One of our main aims and objectives is to support community engagement in the woodlands and create interesting social and educational opportunities to enjoy the park. We had often been asked by visitors to the Farmhouse for maps of the local park for walks and cycles. We also knew there was an enormous history of the land to discover and share. This went right back to its geological origins, and forwards to the social stories of people visiting and using it today. We also wanted to bring alive the magical part of the woods and create new ways to engage with it for children. So, in 2019 we began this project to develop a community map of Craigmillar Castle Park, historical information boards about the park and woodlands, and create and install a Faery door trail in the woods. Each part was carried out with local community members and young people through workshops at Bridgend or in other venues. We gathered stories and research, designed different faery doors with children, and consulted over the park map with various partners like the City of Edinburgh council park ranger. This has now been completed in the summer of 2020. As well as displaying our map and history board here, and printing hard copies to give out at Bridgend once able to we will host an exhibition of the historical boards and all the creative work made that shares and celebrates Craigmillar woods. The boards are too big to display properly on one page, so please click on the image of anyone of them to see a larger view and from there download full size pdf copies (Note many of these files are quite large) |

This project was supported by the City of Edinburgh Council Local Events Fund, and the dedication and commitment of a large team of local volunteers and artists.
(The title Pride of Place came about at the inception of this project when we needed a name to give to the funder's and it sums up how proud we are of the area we inhabit)
