Watch our 2022 short film documenting the last 7 years development of our very own volunteer designed and built bothy at Bridgend here...
NEWS Oct 2021 : Following on from our Bothy Build winning the 2020 Voluntary Arts Epic National Award for Scotland we are now shortlisted again, this time in their Community Led Regeneration category
Watch a  2021 film that showcases the Bothy Build  from the perspective of some of the many people involved.
Bothy Build Update April 2022
Thanks to the continuing funding the progress of the Bridgend Farmhouse Eco-Bothy goes according to the Project Plan meeting its aims of inclusion and training through the construction of a community self-build to create a shared community space.
The Eco-Bothy is now fully insulated after several weeks of hard work by an inspiring team of volunteers. The timber frame work ceiling has been completed and filled with 100% sheep’s wool insulation. An underfloor insulation of "Thermofloc", (a cellulose mixed recycled waste paper product), has been completed.  This required a high quality of joinery and installation to meet the requirements of Building Control and environmental performance. The volunteers have worked to successfully complete the work to exacting standards. The enthusiasm for the project is evident in the care taken at this stage with team conversations around material choice and its application to increase environmental benefits and wider achievements to-date.

Furthermore, all those involved in the project are showing a greater confidence in their own ability to undertake the tasks assigned each day, working easily together as a cohesive team and taking pride in communicating the project to the client as well as the many visitors to the site from the wider community and city.

Volunteer ability to perform all aspects of construction for such a self-build is now self-evident and these skills are being transferred to other community projects, new employment and personal activity that is for some making it possible to plan solutions to ongoing challenges whether personal or professional.

In total the recent stage has been completed over a 6 week period with several volunteers returning for the twice weekly sessions and weekend dates.

Immediate work will now complete the underscoring of the ceiling frame-work with plasterboard and finalise the plans to install electrical services.  Additional work is close to completing full length steps to the decking to provide access to the play area and landscaping of the walled area/garden. This work will conclude with the building of an accessible ramp, completed once ongoing masonry work currently being undertaken by a contractor is complete.  Once all these elements are completed we will subject the project and build to the City of Edinburgh Council for a Building Warrant Completion Certificate.

Several of the volunteers have been with the project since the start and have continued to take an active part in the build and Bridgend Farmhouse Community.

We expect to have completed the majority of Bothy works between the end of May and mid July 2022. Plans for the compost toilet build have been finalised, and we expect the build for that to start around the end of May, for completion by the end of August 2022.

The Outdoor play area build continues going well, with the main structures nearly complete and the landscaping to be started in May, before the instruments and loose play parts are added. Completion for this is due around June 2022.

If you would like to get involved in any of these there are still plenty of opportunities so just contact us via [email protected] to find out more about training days and volunteer opportunities.
