Update Nov 2020: A summation of what has been done and what is planned, by Simon Hackin, the Bothy Build Manager
"Despite losing 5 months of good dry weather this year due to COVID-19 we have made good progress since and a lot has happened in a short space of time at the Bothy.
Working two days per week the volunteer team has been concentrating on weatherproofing the Bothy, gradually enclosing the walls above the lime in larch cladding, installing the upper clerestory windows and on one spectacular weekend day we lifted by bucket our 4 tonnes of soil and pea gravel substrate on to our roof. Come spring we will see what weed seeds have germinated and then begin to plan for planting the green roof. In late November the large Bi-fold doors were installed to the front of the building. Made by a local company and installed within the morning, a long awaited element of the build, transforming the structure into a space. Soon we will have another door, so we are almost ready for winter. Once we have completed the external "envelope" we move inside to complete the clay render walls, add sheeps wool insulation and join the inside to the outside with a floor. Still lots to do, You can help by getting involved as a volunteer, support the project financially by buying a bale or just by spreading the word. Sincere thanks to all the volunteers involved so far. I know many that can't make the week days and I hope to resume weekend volunteer days soon. Many thanks to the Bothy volunteers and Bridgend staff for all their invaluable support and skills." Click here to watch a 2021 film that showcases the Bridgend Bothy Build |
